2016 Adult Sailing Classes

  • Everyone is happy to be back together on the first day of Waterlilies 2016!

Waterlilies is on the calendar once again for Friday mornings from 9:45 to 12 noon starting July 8th. We welcome “lifers” and new members to join in the fun of sailing Herreshoff 12½ footers at Quissett Yacht Club. Sarah Meigs will be running Waterlilies again this year. This popular program could never happen, nor would it continue, without the generosity of our fabulous, tremendously experienced, volunteer instructors who share their time, boats and love of sailing with us each week. Classes will meet on the Harbor House deck as usual.

Interested students should call me at 508-254-4841, or e-mail me at: spmeigs@comcast.net to reserve your spot. Please let me know if you have a Herreshoff or other boat we may use and where it will be moored. Again this year, we will offer spinnaker work. Please let me know if you are interested when signing up. And, please advise on your shirt size is.

Instructors, and Ferry Drivers/Chase boat Drivers are also needed. Please let me know if you are able to help us out this year, and if you have a Herreshoff or a power boat that can be used.

Class dates are Fridays: July 8th, July 15th, July 22nd, August 5th, August 12th, and August 19th. We request a donation from each participating Waterlily ($150 for QYC members; $200 for non-members) payable to the Quissett Yacht Club, to benefit the Junior Sailing Program. Please send your payment to:  QYC, PO Box 681, Falmouth, MA  02541,   and please note Waterlilies 2016 in the footnote of your check. In case of a fully subscribed program, attention will be given to QYC members first. So best get your checks in early.

Please bring a comfortable Coast Guard approved life jacket, sun protective clothing, your cell phone (for emergency use only), sunscreen, water and a hat. Again this year, life jackets will be worn by all participants when on the water. Safety is our top priority.

We look forward to a great turnout this year for lots of fun and friendship on the water.

Racing 101

Anyone who wants to learn to skipper an H 12 with some fun practice races, this is the venue. Skippers in training should recruit an experienced skipper to crew. The crew, in turn, will coach the new skippers through the race. We plan to hold 4 races on the following Fridays: July 1st, 8th, 15th, and August 5th. The warning signal will be at 5PM and we will plan to be back on land on later than 7PM. Races will start at mark "S" and we will have a much longer starting line than found during the regular weekly races.

If you are interested in skippering, please let us know. Or, if  you are  an experienced skipper and would like to teach someone how to race, let us know so we can make sure we can match people up.
