Not Quite the Whiteley Cup

Race Committee crew: Ted Burt, Sarah Meigs, Mike Garfield, Alan Haigh, Brett Buckingham
No times were recorded in this spontaneous race. The Whiteley Cup had been called off by the race committee consisting of Ted Burt, Sarah Meigs, Mike Garfield Sr., Alan Haigh, and Brett Buckingham due to excessive wind conditions. But there were three Herreshoffs sailing around the outer harbor looking for trouble and suggested an in-harbor race. A starting line between two moorings was agreed to, as was a single mark far up in the inner harbor by the Quissett Boat Yard marine railway, and a finish line was set up back at the starting area. The first leg involved a beat through the mooring field in decreasing winds as the boats sailed into the lee of the high ground at the west and north sides of the outer harbor. As a result, the three racers, who had spread out across the course on their way to the inner harbor entrance, arrived at the narrow passage virtually together. More tacking through the tightly-packed inner harbor gave Tom and Olivia First in Olivia, a narrow lead at the turning mark, with Alec Clowes and Jolynn Khamky in Due Dilligence three boat lengths behind, closely followed by Weatherly and Rick Dorris in Pani Baba. Sailing into fresher wind, Olivia extended her lead and won bragging rights for winning the first ever “Not Quite the Whiteley Cup.” It was great fun for all and it was voted worth trying another time.
