Due Diligence Due for a Win

A fluctuating 5 – 8 knot easterly created some challenges for the Race Committee of Wendy Martyna, Sarah Meigs and Doug Jones, and the competitors alike during the Quissett   H-12 Fourth of July Trophy Race. Temporary marks had to be used while every attempt was made to have the H-12’s sailing in different water and airs than the S boats. In addition, a five o’clock yacht club meeting was scheduled and might require a change of attire. The Race Committee set a course involving two short upwind legs, a run and a reach, and one long upwind leg. At the start, the fleet was wonderfully spread out with Due Diligence sailed by Alec Clowes and Jolynn Khamky taking a position at the pin, Ali Rodin and Steve Chalmers in Sea Breeze in the middle of the line, and Mike and Emma Garfield in Phoenix at the boat. Sea Breeze quickly found some lifts and puffs and pulled away from the fleet. After the short windward leg, Due Diligence, Sea Breeze, and Phoenix rounded the mark in close succession. Expert spinnaker work and tight sailing allowed Phoenix to grab a lead during the long spinnaker leg to mark “D.”

On the upwind leg to Gunning Point, Phoenix was torn between covering the fleet and the nearest competitor. In a rematch from the Wednesday evening series race, Phoenix found herself torn between covering Due Diligence or the rest of the fleet. Since Phoenix was riding her own building lift she allowed Due Diligence to head off on her own looking for a favorable wind shift. Much to the chagrin of the fleet, Due Diligence’s search and excellent boat speed paid off as she built a five-minute insurmountable lead over Sea Breeze and Allie Rose by the windward mark. During the subsequent spinnaker reach, Phoenix moved back into second while Mort Saunders and Anna Olsen in Found It sailed an excellent last upwind leg to grab third. After years of mixed finishes, Quissett Yacht Club racers will have to watch out for Alec and Jolynn this year as their recent second and first place finishes indicate that they are the boat to watch.
