S Class Centennial Series at Larchmont Part 2
Quissett sailors (Alan Haigh, Ham Lord, Olivia Lord, Ben Morris, Doug Cooper, Kathy Cooper, George Hunnewell, David Michaelson, Eric Karplus and Christos Karplus) returned to Larchmont, NY on Friday 7/19 to compete in the second round of Centennial racing.
Friday was a long distance race over to Long Island and back in a ten knot southerly and 90 degree temperatures. The course consisted of a beat into the middle of the sound, a reach over to a buoy off Hempstead Harbor, and a long reach back to the finish at the breakwater off Larchmont. Showing good boat speed Alan Haigh in Teaticket rounded the windward mark first and led all the way to the finish, crossing the line for the win. Christos Karplus dialed up Coyote in the freshening breeze and on the final reach passed three boats to take second. Radiant, after struggling upwind fell into the back of the pack. Still, on balance, a great day for Quissett.
Saturday presented higher temperatures (mid 90s), a west wind, and three buoy races. Short up and downs with lots of spinnaker work and leeward gates. Teaticket sailed fast and clean to win another race and Coyote picked up another second.
On Sunday morning, after a postponement, the fleet headed upwind in light air. Coyote found the magic and rounded first. With only half the fleet around the windward mark and with the mercury reaching 100, the wind disappeared, forcing the RC to abandon the race. Cheers of joy spread through the fleet while aboard Coyote it was likely disgust and sobbing.
Awards were handed out at the BIG flag pole by a Commodore in full regalia, despite the extreme heat. Overall for the fifteen boat fleet at the Larchmont regatta: Vindex of Ida Lewis YC first, Pirate from Narragansett Bay second, and Teaticket of QYC third. Coyote posted a respectable seventh while Radiant went looking for the bar with a we-still-had-fun 11th.
Monday morning the Quissett Fleet prepared to return to Buzzards Bay and Quissett. Radiant was hauled and loaded on a trailer while Teaticket and Coyote (Alan Haigh, Jeffrey Keith, Eric and Kirsten Karplus, Jeff Whittle) set sail for their first stop in Port Jefferson, Long Island accompanied by power boat Blue Belle. After surviving a horrific thunderstorm on the highway Radiant returned to Bourne and was re-launched. Teaticket and Coyote continued their sail/tow to Quissett via Fisher’s Island and Cuttyhunk.
On to Newport!
